I visited my favorite pond today, but the insects, frogs, and birds are gone. As I was driving away and wishing for some wildlife, three deer came bounding over the hill. I followed them for about 15 minutes, trying to get clear shots. They stayed on the move and also kept a wary eye on me, especially the largest one at the top. (The smallest one stuck pretty close to the middle one, and I think they must be mother and daughter.)
Everyone says these are female blacktail deer. (But why aren’t their tails black?)
Explore #205 for 10/25/07. Thanks, everyone!

ooOOOoooo Nice catch!!
this is so fake
Hmmm, I wonder why codyunderhill thinks it’s fake. It’s not.
It doesn’t look fake to me… an incredible shot!
Pretty, pretty! I love to see deer along the road, but it’s so hard to get a good shot, this is very well done, congratulations!
so wonderful to get a shot like this!

It actually did kind of look like a painting from the thumbnail. What a great capture!
Perfect timing!
WOO HOO!!!!!! Congratulations on this FANTASTIC shot. I could be wrong, but i don’t think we have mule deer here. These females look like black-tailed deer to me…….and very healthy ones at that. I’m surprised they were so close to civilization. I rarely see them when hiking with jasmine now, and if i do, they run away because the hunters have really spooked them. This is just a GREAT shot …..you got a 3-fer…..that is tremendous. So sharp and gorgeous setting with them in a pyramid/triangle pose!!!!!!!!!
A definite FAVE for me. BTW: I went to Vancouver Lake this afternoon not expecting to see any thing, and lo and behold i found another frog, some insects and a butterfly!!!!

Fabulous capture, Noel. This looks a bit like a painting but certainly not fake. Interesting that someone would make that accusation, not knowing you or bothering to ask if you manipulated the photo at all. It’s certainly better than anything I saw on his site so maybe there’s some envy there.

These are black-tailed deer! We have Mulies here but they have larger ears and different tails! This is gorgeous! I would delete that person’s comment, if I were you!

These are likely Columbian blacktail deer, Odocoileus hemionus columbianus. Blacktail deer are a subspecies of mule deer, the main physical difference being the tail coloration and their smaller size. Mule deer are larger with white tails and black tips.
Wow, thanks everyone for such lovely comments, faves, and invitations! I truly appreciate your support! I’ll go with the concensus that they are blacktail deer.

Hi, I’m an admin for a group called WILD ANIMALS Make Me HAPPY!, and we’d love to have your photo added to the group.
Nice catch Noel, doesn’t look fake at all. Looks like your camera simply metered off the foreground giving a bit of overexposure in the background. Looking at your EXIF data looks like this in fact may be straight out of the camera ? …good job. The triangle formed by deer makes for a great composition.
@nature nook – You make an interesting point about the background. Actually, it isn’t overexposed, it’s misty! There’s a large human-made pond between the deer on the hillside and the trees in the background. It’s owned by a paper company — heaven only knows what they use it for, but it often steams. Hence the misty the background. (Sometimes it foams and smells like rotten eggs.) I’m hoping the deer didn’t spend too much time munching on that grass.
Beautiful Noel……great capture…..I love the mist in the background!

Where was this taken?
Was it in Hillsboro or nearby? (I’m curious if you’ll enter it into the Photo Contest or not)
Thanks!
@tvphoto: It was in West Linn. It’s geotagged if you want a more exact location.
these are not blacktail deer these are whitetail deer and this is very fake i go hunting and dont even haft to realize that your background couldnt be real. But anyways how did you do this?
@seezach: I don’t know one kind of deer from the other, so I accepted other people’s opinion that these were blacktails. The photo really isn’t fake. You’re the second person to say that, though. I wonder why some people see it as fake.
wow this is great people tell me that my photos are fake dont worry about yours mine arent and your arent so come check mine out great pic o and these are whitetails.
Very funny, Zach! And very creative! Have you thought about a career in advertising? Or perhaps in manga or anime?
Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Blacktail Deer, and we’d love to have your photo added to the group.
Thanks for the invitation, Scott Button. Since some people have said that these are not blacktail but whitetail, and I can’t tell the difference, I’ll sadly have to decline your invitation.
We want this photo in:
Around Animals
That is an awesome picture. Almost story book
lots of suckers here….
This photo is a fake!
A couple others think so, too, samsiteone.
After capturing a photo of a blacktail, I’ve decided that these are definitely whitetails. That means they’re on the Endangered Species List.

The little one running away says: We are So busted!!!!!
Three statisticians go deer hunting with bows and arrows. They
spot a big buck and take aim. One shoots and his arrow flies off
three metres to the right. The second shoots and his arrow flies
off three metres to the left. The third statistician jumps up and
down yelling; We got him! We got him!
